5 Questions With: Motion City Soundtrack

By Emily Finkelstein

On your website (evenifitkillsme.tv) I noticed you guys created webisodes to track the making of the new CD, how’d you come up with that idea?
We just thought it was a cool way to document studio footage and things we have going on. We were going to do one a week until the record came out, then we pushed the record back so we were like uh-oh. We thought it’d be cool if our fans could see the making of it. In fact, in one of them, we get stuck in an elevator. I don’t know how visibly freaked out we were, but we were both starting to get pretty scared for a bit there. We were in there for about 40 minutes, so I just leaned against the wall, bent my knees, and stayed in the corner. So that was my way of keeping myself sane.

What’s your ideal music gig?
It’s hard to describe, but we just played in Japan on a mountain for the Fuji Rock Festival and maybe if the temperature was a little cooler and breezier that would be perfect. It’s amazing to be able to stand on a huge stage in front of a huge crowd and have a giant green mountain right in front of you. The crowd in Japan was so respectful, excited, and energetic. I saw The Cure on the same stage the night before, it was amazing.

If you could live in any era, which one would it be?
I’m a big technology nerd so I might actually jump forward a few years. I might go into the future. I’m still waiting for these flying cars and moving sidewalks that we heard about in the 80s and are supposed to have right about now. I’d like to maybe see if space has been colonized yet, too.

Your new album Even if it Kills Me just came out… do you have any sort of message you want your listeners to take from the album?
The title of the record when you hear it can sound sort of negative, and it is in a way, but it’s also in an odd way kind of a positive title too, just because of personal things that we went through. Justin’s had a few struggles and there’s a lot of that being addressed and a lot of relationship songs in this record. Basically, if you put your mind to something you can get through it even if it kills you. You can do it. They’re kind of darker lyrics but with a light at the end of the tunnel so it’s not completely depressing.

How do you feel about the fact that the majority of our readers who have your album have probably acquired it illegally?
I was in college once and I know what it’s like to not have money. I don’t rip music anymore, I use iTunes religiously or buy CDs. I’ll go buy it if I like it. But ripping music has ultimately brought people to our shows so if it means them not buying our CD and coming to our shows instead, that’s fine. It doesn’t really bother me. It’s a bit of a bummer if they are able to buy it though and they don’t.
